Sokhumi, also known as Sukhumi, is a city on the Black Sea coast and the capital of the breakaway region of Abkhazia, which is internationally recognized as part of Georgia. It has a population of around 60,000 people and is situated in the north-western part of the region.
Sokhumi has a long and complex history, with various different powers controlling the city at different times. It was a major port city during the Soviet era and served as the capital of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the region of Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia, leading to a conflict between the two sides in the early 1990s.
Today, Sokhumi is the administrative, cultural and economic center of Abkhazia, but its status as a capital is not recognized by the international community. The city has experienced significant development in recent years, with the construction of new buildings, hotels, and tourist facilities. It is also a popular tourist destination for its beautiful beaches, historic architecture, and subtropical climate.
